Buck threw himself into his work in an attempt to put Summer out of his mind. She'd rejected him twice and that should be enough for him to get the hint. It was, but then again, it wasn't. He hadn't been this attracted to a woman since ... maybe never, if he were honest with himself.

He was trying to concentrate on a deposition when his secretary rang through with a call from the very woman whose sparkling, gray eyes kept swimming between him and the words on the page.

“Summer,” he said, as briskly as possible, trying to give the impression of a man who was too busy to talk on the phone.

“Buck. Hi, how are you?” Summer replied, acting as if they were old friends who hadn't spoken in a while.

“Busy,” he replied, fiddling with his pen.

“Sorry to bother you at work, but I don't have your home phone.”

“It's okay, but I'm snowed under here. What can I do for you?”

“I'll be brief, then.” Summer took a deep breath and plunged in. “It's Frankie. He and Frank are going fishing this Saturday and he's been nagging me to ask you to go with them.” A slight exaggeration, since she'd been the one to suggest the outing to give her an excuse to call Buck.

“Fine. I could probably use the break by then. I'll call Frank to set it up.” He paused, waiting for her to say something. “Anything else?”

“No, no, that's it. Thank you, Buck. Frankie will be thrilled.”

“Bye, then,” Buck told her, barely giving Summer a chance to breathe her own goodbye.

He hung on to the phone far longer than necessary, unwilling to break the connection. Why had she called? Why was his palm sweaty and his mouth dry? There was nothing special about her voice and there was certainly nothing even remotely romantic about her call. Maybe she was some kind of crackpot stalker, looking for any excuse to contact him. What if she showed up on Saturday, or worse, came along?

Only one thing was certain. If he did see her again, he had absolutely no idea how to handle his feelings. Big time lawyer; cool, calm and collected in the courtroom. In complete control of his emotions at all times, and he couldn't handle the hots for a little slip of a woman.
